Bands, Bands and More Bands at Norman Music Festival
July 30, 2019
Free and open to the public, the Norman Music Festival started in 2008 as a one-day event. It has since grown to span two nights and one full day and night during which more than 100 bands perform a wide selection of music in both indoor venues and outdoor stages.
Over the years, the festival has also expanded beyond music to include food, arts and crafts. It all takes place on the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of historic Downtown E. Main Street, east of the railroad tracks in the Downtown Norman Arts District.
Traditionally, this festival is held on the third Thursday through Saturday of April. However, if that weekend conflicts with the Easter holiday then the festival shifts to the fourth weekend to avoid conflicts with other Norman festivities.
The Thursday night and Friday night entertainment is predominantly held at indoor locations. But on Saturday the festival atmosphere becomes full-blown, complete with street closures and large outdoor stages. Rock and roll, hip hop, country, funk, Latin and electronica are typically among the many musical genres performed.
During the 2019 Norman Music Festival, held April 25 through April 27, Beach Fossils, Soccer Mommy, Black Milk with Band Nat Turner, The Garden, and Omar Apollo were among the many groups that performed.
Thousands come to enjoy the shows at everything from large main stages to intimate local venues. Poetry slams, spoken word performances and stand-up comedy are also held throughout the festival.
The festival also features an open-air market. The market offers regional arts and vendors selling handmade crafts and goods. Shoppers can purchase home décor, jewelry, clothing, and more.
Definitely a family event, the festival offers entertainment for all ages. Children can jam out to musical acts at the Little Rocker Stage, get a rock star hairdo or even create their own art.
The next Norman Music Festival is scheduled for April 23 – 25, 2020.
