Pepper Picking

August 5, 2022

And boy were they good! If you are in the Mustang area, check out Buffalo Creek Berry Farm. It is a pick-your-own farm that grows thornless blackberries, strawberries, sand plums, and black raspberries. They also have a full garden with a variety of vegetables for the picking, Mother Nature cooperating, of course. Give them a call or check out their Facebook page to make sure they are open before you go.

They are open Tuesday 5p-7p, Thursday 5p-7p, and Sunday 2p-5p.

Bring the whole family to pick your own produce and berries! They provide the buckets, bags, and scales while accepting all forms of payment. Most produce is sold by the pound at market prices.

According to Facebook posts, Buffalo Creek is at the Mustang Farmers Market in Wild Horse Park on many Saturdays, from roughly 8 am till Noon. They list the days that they are open and what produce they will have on their Facebook page. Produce might include tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, okra, peppers, and onions to buy by the pound, along with homemade salsa, dill pickles, sweet pickles, strawberry jam, local honey, zucchini bread, and pumpkin bread. You can also choose your own Rush Springs watermelons and cantaloupes.

Most folks hit up this farm for strawberries, but that season just ended (but keep them in mind for next year). Strawberries are in peak season from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day. Also, there are no green beans this year … the sun burned them to a crisp (no sunblock for green beans, you know). With that being said, there are still plenty more options to choose from so your fridge and cupboards will not be bare. And the blackberries are about to fruit again. We just love blackberry cobbler!

So, load up the family for an ideal morning or afternoon of produce and berry picking. It will be worth your time, and your taste buds will thank you for all that fresh flavor!

Another Oklahoma tradition you will want to catch is the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival, which celebrates local seasonal watermelons with watermelon-themed activities, carnival rides, and family-friendly entertainment. The festival has been held annually since 1948 and has grown to more than 20,000 festivalgoers each year.

There will be a seed-spitting contest, an arts and crafts fair with more than 100 vendors, carnival rides, live entertainment, stage shows, on-site food vendors, and a classic car show. Another day trip where the whole family will have a blast! Get more information on their website listed above.
