Winterizing Your Sprinkler System
January 21, 2025
Some Ideal homes have sprinkler systems that will need to be prepared for winter weather.
Backflow is controlled under a Dekora fake rock
- Locate the main shut-off valve in your yard and turn the ball valve ¼ turn to shut off water to the backflow. This is typically in a 6” green round box in the front yard, near sewer cleanouts, along flower beds, or by the water meter. The cover sits flush to the ground and the valve is under the ground. (If there are wires in the valve box, don’t touch anything—that’s the wrong box.)
- Turn the brass valves 1/4 turn on the backflow to drain the water. Ensure heat tape and sensors (if applicable) are properly wrapped around the PVC and backflow. Check the GFCI plug to make sure it hasn’t tripped. This will need to be checked throughout the season.
- Do not turn the ball valves on the backflow off. This can trap water in the backflow and cause it to freeze. For extra protection, sprinkler systems can be blown out using compressed air.
- Place an insulation bag over the backflow and reinstall the Dekora fake rock. Run a test cycle through the entire program (1–2 minutes per zone). After the test cycle, turn the controller off.
